Hey remember a few weeks ago when Beyoncé rocked our collective worlds and dropped Lemonade?
Yeah. I remember that too.
If there was one way to describe me, it would be as a Beyoncé fan. I am unabashedly obsessed. And if you're like me, and you categorize your life according to whatever album Beyoncé has just released, then congratulations because you're awesome. And, like me, you were probably losing your mind on Sunday April 23rd, the day Lemonade descended from the heavens, and also the day I became a woman.
Lemonade is a masterpiece. It's visually stunning, the music is innovative and thought provoking, and the album's message of forgiveness and self empowerment is absolutely inspiring. There's so much more to Lemonade than Jay-Z's alleged infidelity, but it's also worth mentioning just because it provided a lot of depth and gave us a glimpse into Beyoncé's life that we don't normally get. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Especially if that woman is Beyoncé.
During that first week, which we will now refer to as "after Lemonade" or "a.l.", I evenly divided my time at work into two activities. Cornering people near the elevator to spread the gospel of Lemonade, and scouring the internet for any and every Beyoncé themed think-piece that was published. After all, what is work if not a place you go to discuss Beyoncé with acquaintances?
Well, lucky for you, I've compiled a list of some of my favorite essays about Beyoncé. Mostly written directly after Lemonade dropped, but some before then. Read them, like them, live them.
Here are some of my favorites:
